Liverpool have called on Uefa to let them defend the trophy they won in a penalty shoot-out against AC Milan in Istanbul on Wednesday 25th May 2005.

It would be totally wrong if the champions are not allowed to defend their championship. Liverpool’s achievement has been recognised by the fact that they have been allowed to keep the trophy for their fifth victory and if they are not allowed to enter next year to win the new trophy it would be completely unjust. |

I believe that as Champions Liverpool should have the right to defend their trophy and that UEFA should have had a B plan ready for this situation as it was foreseeable. However, I feel strongly that including Liverpool in next seasons competition should not be at the expense of a so called smaller team. During my career I played for Rovaniemi and we qualified for the 1988 UEFA cup as Finland’s representative. We eventually lost to Marseille in the quarter finals, but because of that cup run we put both Rovaniemi and Finland on the map. Football is about surprises and situations where smaller teams cause upsets. It is therefore vital that Liverpool are given the chance to defend their title, but that all the smaller teams that have already qualified are kept in the competition. |
